Reflection 3

Trinity Marie A. Espiritu

Tuesday ( Day 11 )

For this week, I started first on the tasks that is easy to do and I have a background with which is to determine the most profitable in terms of production months and link it to pond sizes. Supposedly, the mode of my internship should be in the office but when I woke up in the morning, I feel so heavy. That’s why I messaged my supervisor first thing in the morning if it is possible to conduct it remotely.

Going back to the tasks, I brainstormed first what are the KPIs would I need to used. The pond’s end month of harvest of shrimp, year, pond area, biomass, and profit are what I considered. From that, I made another KPI to be considered which is Profit/kg and Yield/sqm para makita yung economic efficiency and to evaluate space productivity.

There is no fancy formula that I need. I only used a pivot table and a graph to represent the linear connection of pond area and profit (average and sum of profit/kg). Moreover, I made a pivot table based on the “end month of production” which have the same results with what I did last week about the season with a high production in terms of profit.

The picture below is the sample output of what I did for my first day, it also includes the analyzation essay that I made.

Wednesday (Day 12)

For this day, I just consolidate what I know and analyze for the past days to make the decision to “suggest modifications to production plans” which is my second task for this week. The list below are the main topic that I suggest:

  1. Pond Aide assignment and incentive management

    • assign high performing pond aide to  problematic ponds

    •  incentivize not just the biomass and profit but also performance indicators like Z-scores, consistency, survival rate of the shrimp, and FCR to reward not just the output.

    • track performance seasonally.

  2. Seasonal stocking and harvesting strategies

  3. Cost control and operational efficiency

I don’t want to explain what I suggest explicitly as I felt like hindi pa ito final and I still want to delve deeper into it and to check the correlations and external standards,

Well, today is a chill day but all’s well that ends well since wala na kong sakit haha.

Thursday (Day 13)

Today is a site-visit to the shrimp farm at Zambales. We learned that there is a problem in some of the ponds since rainy season starts to pour. Some pond are not operating properly and cant be continued as there is some problem with some equipments. One major cause of the delay of stocking of “fry” - baby shrimp, is that the liner for the ponds are all torned apart. It lead to the question if it is because of the rainy season or just the drainage system and structural elevation’s design are flawed? Or baka low-quality materialswere used despite them saying it met industry standards?

Wala akong major tasks done today since I was focused on observing, taking notes, and asking around. But it added so much value to my pond design analysis task.

Friday ( Day 14 )

Today, it is onsite. Another pasakit na naman to commute eme. I think the highlight of this day is that kalagitnaan na ng work saka lang nagsuspend. The municipality knows naman na there is a bagyo that is coming to the Philippine area of responsibility, hays.

Anyway, for this day, I just consolidate some of the research or readings that I find in the internet about how the pond operates and what is the standard equipments and production in the market. Well, today is not a fun day since I read a three 400+ pages books and still can’t make a suggestion on what materials are good to used for shrimp farming. Maybe it is in the way of how I take notes. Some datas just don’t add up. Other than that, I learned how to used ZERO, an accounting software, actually, it should be in the fifth week where I should learned this. But I think I will just do it for 150 hours so that I won’t be late for the next semester. It will also help me to lessen my cost of living since I need to save up for the next semester.

Monday ( Day 15 )

Today is not a fun day and since it is remote I kind of slack off with my works. So, today is just more on the research stuff about the “identifying the characteristics of an efficient ponds.” Actually, I started this task last Wednesday but the datas that I need to analyze some area is not available and it takes the farm manager to update the figures in 3 days, that is why there is a delay in this project or tasks or assignment.

My draft for this task or my initial analysis was: ponds farther from the sea—though expected to have elevation issues—actually performed better in terms of yield, FCR, and profit per kilo. I grouped ponds by distance (<500m, 500–700m, >700m) and found that ponds in group A (<500m) and C (>700m) outperformed those in group B (500–700m), which was counterintuitive. This became one of the highlights of my report.

I still cant finish it all in the same day, so I think there would be a delay in my assignments due date. My supervisor don’t really “hapit” me, she just want me to take things slow but I think it is just my nature to do things as soon and fast as possible that is why I am stressing out for things that I dont have a control of.
